NIJU

NIJŪ is a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Mayfair, occupying 20 Berkeley Street — a discreet address just moments from Green Park. The name is a subtle nod to its location: nijū means twenty in Japanese.

The restaurant is guided by the culinary direction of Endo Kazutoshi, whose influence is felt in the precision of the sushi, the quality of the fish handling and the quiet discipline of the kitchen. The approach is rooted in Katei Ryōri — Japanese home-style cooking — interpreted with a refined, contemporary sensibility.

The space is divided into two distinct dining rooms. One is centred around a compact sushi counter, offering a close view of the chefs at work and a more intimate, informal experience. The main dining room is designed for relaxed, sociable meals, suited equally to midweek dining or longer evenings.

Menus move between carefully judged small plates, nigiri and sashimi, and a grill section focused on house-aged beef and seasonal produce. Konro-grilled cuts are finished at the table, while dishes such as whole Dover sole with nori brown butter or turbot with miso and sea herbs highlight the kitchen’s confidence with both restraint and flavour.

Beneath the restaurant sits Nipperkin, a basement cocktail bar inspired by Japanese listening bars of the 1950s. It offers an atmospheric setting for drinks before or after dinner, while upstairs the concise Jimoto cocktail list presents Japanese-influenced takes on classic serves.
