Overview

There are few restaurant arrivals quite like this. Depending on the tide, Burgh Island is reached either by foot across the sands or aboard its famous sea tractor, a journey that has become every bit as iconic as the island itself.

Waiting on the other side is The Nettlefold Restaurant, Burgh Island's principal dining room, named after the hotel's visionary founder, Archibald Nettlefold. Here, remarkable design heritage, rugged Devon coastline and one of Britain's most distinctive island settings come together around the table.

Open to both hotel residents and non-residents, The Nettlefold serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, making it possible to experience Burgh Island without staying overnight. Large windows frame uninterrupted views across Bigbury Bay, while the kitchen celebrates the very best of Devon's coast and countryside, from freshly landed seafood to seasonal ingredients sourced from the surrounding region.

Whether you're crossing for a leisurely lunch, afternoon tea overlooking the bay or an elegant dinner as the sun drops beyond the coastline, The Nettlefold offers a dining experience that feels wonderfully removed from the everyday.

A Conversation with Joanne Harris at the Burgh Isl...

Bigbury on Sea, Devon

There are few literary settings quite like Burgh Island. Reached by its famous sea tractor at high tide or on foot across the sands, this iconic island has inspired generations of writers, most famously Agatha Christie, who immortalised it in Evil Under the Sun and And Then There Were None.

It's a fitting stage, then, for an afternoon with internationally acclaimed author Joanne Harris, whose bestselling novel Chocolat became the Oscar-nominated film starring Juliette Binoche.

A Conversation with Ruth Ware at the Burgh Island Hotel

Bigbury on Sea, Devon

Burgh Island has always been a place where mystery feels entirely at home. Its dramatic setting inspired Agatha Christie to create Evil Under the Sun and And Then There Were None, and nearly a century later it remains one of Britain's most evocative literary destinations.

Join bestselling psychological crime novelist Ruth Ware for an afternoon of conversation in the elegant surroundings of The Nettlefold Restaurant. Over traditional afternoon tea, Ruth explores the enduring appeal of suspense, isolated settings and the influence Christie continues to have on modern crime fiction.
