Executive Chef - Andrew Birch

Andrew Birch developed a passion for cooking when he was a schoolboy in Swansea, and went on to train in South Wales and Stratford on Avon. He then gained his passion for seafood while working for the Tanner brothers, which developed further under Michelin starred chef Kenny Atkinson at his restaurant on the Isle of Scilly.

After working for three years as Senior sous chef at the 3AA rosette (and Michelin starred at the time) Montagu Arms, under Matthew Tomkinson, Andrew became Head Chef at Fishmore Hall in Ludlow.

Andrew competed in the Great British Menu in 2016.

Inspired by local producers, Andrew has based his menu at Lainston on using the very best ingredients from UK suppliers, believing they are at the roof of success of contemporary British cuisine.

Fancy a real escape to the country in lavish but welcoming style? Dating back to the late 17th century but with parts (an old chapel) going back as far as the 12th century, this is a magnificent stately home originally commissioned by Charles II as a new palace in Winchester. Now a five star country house hotel, it is part of the privately owned Exclusive Hotel group with renowned SEASON cookery school in the 63 acres of grounds.

The Avenue restaurant at Lainston House takes its name from the spectacular mile avenue of lime trees visible from the restaurant window and partially in the grounds. The Avenue is an intimate, elegant restaurant available for dinner dining and it regularly features as one of Hampshire's finest. Also enjoy afternoon tea in the Avenue restaurant, or Terraces when the weather is kind, or in the Drawing Room. We also recommend to book a falconry experience or take a walk in the grounds prior to or after your indulgent afternoon tea. Please note, afternoon tea is served from 1pm Monday to Saturday and from 2.30pm on Sundays.

Thoughtfully prepared dishes offer an ideal blend of traditional cooking with simplicity, freshness and purity. The extensive menu is ostensibly English with a regional French influence.
